The Piru Neighborhood Council (PNC) is committed to ensuring our community is ready for any emergency—whether it’s a fire, flood, or other natural disaster. Our goal is to provide you with the tools, resources, and best practices to stay safe and informed during challenging times. Here’s everything you need to be prepared and protect yourself, your family, and your property.
Emergency Preparedness: Be Ready, Stay Safe
Being prepared is the key to protecting yourself, your loved ones, and our town during emergencies. Here are a few important steps to take now:
1. Create a Family Emergency Plan
- Ensure everyone in your household knows how to reach each other and where to go in case of evacuation.
- Designate a meeting place outside of your home in case you’re separated.
- Practice your plan regularly, so everyone is comfortable with the process.
2. Build a Disaster Kit
Have these essential supplies on hand:
- Water (1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days)
- Non-perishable food (3-day supply)
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First-aid kit and medications
- Important documents (in a waterproof container)
- Local maps and a battery-powered radio
3. Stay Informed

Resources for Flood and Fire Emergencies
Flood Preparedness
- Know Your Flood Risk: Flood zones in [Town Name] are updated regularly. Check the [Flood Risk Map] to understand if you live in a flood-prone area.
- Elevate Your Property: If you live in a flood zone, consider elevating appliances and important utilities to minimize damage.
- Flood-Specific Emergency Kit: In addition to your general emergency kit, consider having:
- Waterproof boots and clothing
- Sandbags to protect your property
- Plastic sheets and duct tape for temporary sealing
Fire Preparedness
- Clear the Area: Maintain defensible space around your home by clearing leaves, dead trees, and shrubs. Fire-resistant materials on the exterior of your home can help prevent the spread of fire.
- Create a Fire Escape Plan: Practice how to exit your home safely, especially if smoke makes it hard to see. Ensure that all windows and doors can be opened easily.
- Fire-Resistant Landscaping: Use fire-resistant plants around your home and avoid combustible materials like wood or mulch close to buildings.
Best Practices for Every Emergency
Communication is Key
- Keep a list of emergency contacts (family, friends, local officials) and make sure everyone has access to it.
- If you need to evacuate, do so immediately. Don’t wait until conditions worsen.
Stay Calm
- In any emergency, staying calm is crucial. Take a deep breath, follow your emergency plan, and listen to instructions from local authorities.
Help Neighbors
- If you are able, assist elderly or disabled neighbors who may need extra help in times of crisis. Together, we’re stronger!
